Obituary

Kevin A. Woods, 51, of Pelham, New York, died Friday, August 11, 2017. An exceptionally kind and loving man, he adored and was cherished by his wife, Meg, and his sons, Jack and Gavin, as well as his extended family: mother- and father-in-law Pat and Bill Langley, sister- and brother-in-law Pam and Owen Carragher, nephews Ryan and Will Carragher and niece Megan Carragher.

Born in Paisley, Scotland, Kevin moved to Chicago at the age of four with his parents, James Woods and Margaret McGonigle Woods, and his two brothers, Dermot and Brendan. He later moved to California, where he graduated from San Diego State University. Kevin treasured his Scottish heritage, but was proud to become a citizen of the United States in 2016.

Kevin moved to New York City in 1991, where he began a career in financial technology and met his future wife, Meg, charming her with his intelligence and easy-going humor. Their initial meeting at a party turned into a long walk around the city and conversation over a cup of coffee. They married in 1993.

A well-loved member of the Pelham community since 2002, Kevin loved the architecture, vibrancy, cafes and neighborhoods of New York City and took particular joy in introducing his sons and their friends to the sights of Manhattan and taking the family's dog, Grady, for long romps around Brooklyn.

An easy conversationalist and a good listener, Kevin made a habit of sitting in the front seat of taxi cabs, the better to see the city he adored and chat with the drivers. He was quick to share a funny story and laugh at himself. An adventurer with a true penchant for seeking joy, Kevin loved "chasing the sunset" to see a beautiful sky. He took up skiing in his 40s, hitting the slopes early and leaving late, often joking that while he may not be the best skier in Vermont, he was certainly one of the best dressed. Together with his sons, he braved the waves of Nauset Beach on Cape Cod and learned to surf. He loved to swim, play tennis, watch the Orleans Firebirds and cheer on his favorite team, Man United FC.

A man of many interests, Kevin was happiest being with his family. He loved trying new restaurants and traveling with his wife and debating important issues with his sons around the dinner table. An intelligent, gentle and caring man, he taught his children kindness by demonstrating it every day with even the smallest interactions. He was generous with his time and attention, not only with his wife and children, but with his extended family, his friends and his children's friends.

The family will be receiving visitors on Tuesday, August 15 from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, NY (914-738-1060). A celebration of Kevin's life will take place on Wednesday, August 16th, at 11:00 am at Huguenot Memorial Church, 901Pelhamdale Avenue, Pelham Manor NY (914-738-3488). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kevin's honor to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City.
