John W. Tomlinson of the Bronx, NY passed away on Monday, September 26. He was 96 years old. Born in Jamaica, West Indies one of four children to Charles and Marion (Mair) Tomlinson, John attended school and when he was old enough began an apprenticeship with a local tailor. When the opportunity presented itself to go with his older brother, Alec, to the United States, he took it.
When John was 17 he moved to New York with his brother and went to work for a tailor in the City. When World War II began, John enlisted in the Army. He would be highly decorated for his service and play a part of the Allies Forces invasion at Normandy. While serving in the military, John received word that he had become a US. Citizen. When he was done with active duty, John returned home to New York and was blessed to catch the eye of Madge Morgan. He had known her since he first came to New York at 17, but Madge was not easily impressed by boys. Upon his return from the war, John had matured into the man of integrity that he was. The two were married on June 29th 1946 and would remain together and raise a family together until her death in 2015.
To support his new family John went to work for the US Post Office but quickly found his career in Law Enforcement. John was a New York City Police Officer holding several positions throughout his career until his retirement in 1980.
John enjoyed his retirement and loved travelling with his family. He was just as content to be at home and tinker around the house, work at a cross word puzzle or watch some T.V. He was a man of integrity, values who cherished his family.
