He finished his course, he fought the good fight, he kept the faith.

He finished his course, he fought the good fight, he kept the faith.

On Sunday December 6th 2020, Fr, Gerard Paul Travers of Holy Family Church, New Rochelle, New York passed away peacefully. He was 82 years old. Born in Mount Vernon, New York to Gerard and Gladys Travers, Gerard was one of four children. Gerard attended Sacred Heart Grammar School in Mount Vernon and Cathedral Prep in Manhattan. He would eventually enter St. Josephs seminary in Yonkers and be ordained a diocesan priest in 1965. Fr. Travers furthered his education and would later receive a Masters Degree from St John's University in pastoral counseling.

Fr, Travers began his vocation as an associate pastor at St. Clement & St. Michael's parish in Staten Island. He then would move to St, Catherine's Church in Blauvelt, NY before becoming pastor at St. Lawrence O'Toole parish in Brewster. He would then move to St, Patricks in Highland Mills, where he served as pastor for twenty years and retired as pastor emeritus.

Fr. Travers was an athlete in his day. He skied past his 80th birthday, played golf. enjoyed walking and swimming at the beach. You could also have seen Fr. Travers doing a New York Time's crossword puzzle or indulging in a good book. But most of all Fr. Travers loved being a servant of God, a teacher, counselor and a friend of many. He had a great interest in people, was extremely generous, non judgmental and a man of few words.

Fr. Travers is survived by his brother John (Betty), his sister Gladys (Jeff) O' Rourke, His three nieces Eileen (James) Gregware, Denise (Matt) McGillen and Tara (Steve) Demoratz. He is also survived by his Uncle Charles Butterfield. He will be missed by his two great-nephews and three great-nieces. Fr. Condolence & Memory Journal

My condolences to his Family and Friends. I am a distant cousin on the Sullivan side. He helped me with Family history research last year and I am very grateful.

Fr. Travers was a good and humble priest, whom I knew when he was pastor at St. Patrick's, Highland Mills. His sermons were simple and thoughtful and gave me encouragement. He was always supportive of the modest efforts I made to help the parish with the RCIA and Adult Bible Study May he rest in peace, and be swiftly welcomed into heaven

It was a wonderful time in our lives serving the community of St. Patrick's. Fr. Travers was an important part of that experience. His caring and compassion for us, our family, and for all those within the community, was an important influence on us, and on our children. We have been enriched through his presence in our lives. We will miss him dearly. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

We are greatly saddened by the passing of Father Travers, who we have always known as "Paul". We have known him for some 60 years as a dedicated priest, stalwart of his family and a good friend. He will be greatly missed. Dan and Judy Glum.

It was my privilege and pleasure to serve under Fr. Travers for 10 years as a lector and member of the parish council while he was Pastor at St. Patrick's Church in Highland Mills, New York. He is one of only a few priests who have made a lasting impression on me as I travel on my spiritual journey. I am sure there are many who can attest to the same. God bless and reward you Fr. Travers for being a faithful servant. You are sure to have a seat at the banquet that has been prepared. I will see you again in Heaven.

I had the great privilege and pleasure to serve under Fr. Travers as a lector and member of the parish council for 10 years at St. Patrick's Church in Highland Mills, New York, while he was Pastor. He is one of the few priests I have interacted with in my lifetime that have made a lasting impression on me as I continue my spiritual journey. I am sure there are many who can attest similarly. God bless and reward you Fr. Travers for being a faithful servant. I will see you again in Heaven. - John Magrino

My love and prayers for John and GladysAnn. Our families have a long and warm connection. I can see Uncle Gerry tap dancing as he reunites with Paul.

For so many years we had the opportunity and good fortune to get to know Gerry on so many levels. As a priest we saw his love of God and his commitment to his parish work and his love of the scripture and the sacraments. He engaged us to work with him in Pre-Cana and to work in the CCD program with the seniors from TZ. Those senior weekend retreats brought out his love of these kids and his sense of humor as he listened and preached to them in a way that brought Jesus to life for them. He Baptized two of our children. We became friends and shared many nights around the dinner table in Blauvelt and at the beach when he would come down to Spring Lake for the Pastors workshop. He was a simple man , many thought he was aloof but in reality he was shy and unassuming. He cared and he was loyal. He will be missed.

Gerry was part of our family while he was serving at St. Catharines in Blauvelt. My mother was the rectory secretary so he was an integral part of our lives growing up and as recent as this September when we were honored to have him concelebrate my mother's funeral mass. God welcomed him with open arms as he was a true servant and a fine man. May he rest in eternal peace.
