Tribute & Message From The Family

Loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother

Rita Soccodato of Pelham Manor, passed away on Friday, June 22, 2018. She was 95 years old.

Born in the Bronx to Michael D'Avi and Filomena Russo, Rita was one of three children. She attended local Catholic School before going to work at the United States Department of War.

While living and working in the Bronx Rita would meet her husband Benjamin Soccodato. It was a memorable first date to say the least. While on their way to dinner Benjamin's car ran out of gas. This was only a small set back for Rita. Her love and patience was so great that she later married Benjamin in 1949. She owned and operated Benjamin Jewlers, then raised her son, then went work for TPR Publishing Company where she worked until age 75, and then continued to her work at St.Pius X until she was 85 years old. She loved children especially her grandchildren who were always near and dear.

Rita will be remembered as a caring hard working lady who was kind and had great patience. She loved to travel, read and knit in her spare time. She enjoyed taking trips to Italy and Spain where she enjoyed the beaches and the latest trends in fashion.

Rita is survived by her son Benjamin (Lois), her grandchildren; Jacqueline, Benjamin Jr. (Charise), Amy (Raymond) and her 5 Great grand children. She is predeceased by her husband Benjamin and her brothers Joseph and Mario.

A celebration of Rita's life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home, located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, NY, on Monday, July 2nd from 4:00 to 8:00 AM. A mass of Christian Burial will take place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, located at 575 Fowler Avenue, Pelham Manor NY. on Tuesday, July 3rd at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made in Rita's name to the Pelham Library.

Dear Ben and Family, I am your second cousin. We have met once upon a time at a D'Avi family reunion. :) I just heard the news of Rita's passing yesterday. When I shared it with my mother, Vilma, she said that Rita was her hero. she always looked up to her. Rita was 9 yeas older than Vilma. Our deepest sympathies during this difficult time. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
